Papailiou Ioannis

He was born in Athens and studied at the Medical School of the University of Rome (1971–1978). In 1978, following examinations at the Medical School of Athens, his degree was officially recognized. From 1979 to 1980, he fulfilled his military obligations.

He completed his residency in Radiology at “Alexandra” and “Aretaeio” Hospitals (1980–1984). In 1984, he received certification of suitability in CT, and in 1990 in MRI, from the Department of Radiology of the University of Athens, “Aretaeio” Hospital. He was awarded the specialty in Radiodiagnostics in 1984. In 1988, he earned his doctoral degree from the University of Athens with a thesis on Interventional Radiology, graduating with distinction. Since 1984, he has been continuously engaged in Interventional Radiology, and in 2013 he received official subspecialty certification in Interventional Radiology from the Ministry of Health.

He served in the National Health System as a Radiologist with the ranks of Registrar and Senior Registrar at “Agios Savvas” Hospital (1984–1996). He was then appointed Director at “Asklepieion” Hospital of Voula (1996–2003) and later at Konstantopouleio Hospital of “Agia Olga” (2003–2017), where he served as Coordinating Director. In 2002, he was appointed regular member of the selection committee for Directors of Radiology in the National Health System. In 2005 and again in 2015, he was elected Director of the Medical Service at Konstantopouleio Hospital, and in 2015–2016 he was appointed Acting Director of the same hospital by the Ministry of Health.

He has served as a member of the organizing committee for six national conferences (1987–2012), and from 1993 to the present he has been selected for 38 conference presidencies. Between 1986 and today, he has attended 101 conferences and participated with 220 scientific papers in national and international conferences. His research output includes 103 scientific publications in Greek and international journals, as well as 12 book chapters (one in a foreign language). His 26 international publications have received 197 citations (2014). He has delivered 219 invited lectures and presentations, and in 1993 he participated as Principal Investigator in a research program. In 2018, he was awarded an honorary plaque for his contribution to Interventional Radiology.

Since June 2017, he has been serving as an Interventional Radiologist at Metropolitan Hospital, with extensive experience in CT-guided biopsies of solid organ tumors, drainage of fluid collections and abscesses, nephrostomies, cholecystostomies, and thermocautery of malignant liver tumors.
