PROFILE
Dr. Lykissas is the Director of the Metropolitan Hospital Department of Pediatric Orthopedics and Spine. He is also a clinical associate at the Orthopedic Clinic of the Weill Cornell University Medical School in New York, and a University Scholar at the University of Ioannina.
He is an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in the surgical management of spinal deformities in children and adults. He is considered one of the most experienced doctors, implementing all modern treatment methods for pediatric conditions in the USA, with a special interest in correcting deformities of the lower limbs, hip joint disorders, sports injuries in children and adolescents, and congenital or acquired upper limb abnormalities.
In addition to many years of training and experience in surgery, Dr. Lykissas has been recognized abroad for his dedication to patients and his social contribution. For many years, he has been offering his services as a volunteer child and spine surgeon in developing countries around the world, including India, Vietnam and the Congo, which he visits every year.
Dr. Lykissas received his medical degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 2000. After completing his specialty training at the Orthopedic Clinic, University of Ioannina, he worked as an Orthopedic Surgeon in the USA, where he specialized in surgery of the spine and pediatric orthopedics. More specifically, he attended specialty training in Pediatric Orthopedics at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, ranked third in the field among all pediatric hospitals in the USA. He attended specialty training in Spine Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, the best Orthopedic Hospital in the USA according to US News and World Report. He also worked at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the New York Hospital and the Presbyterian Hospital Westchester in New York. Finally, he attended specialty training in surgery of the hand and upper limb during an annual program funded by the European Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand, held in the USA.
Dr. Lykissas has also attended specialty training in microsurgery. In addition to numerous publications in microsurgery and his activity as a trainer of young surgeons, he is also a Member of the Editorial Board of the US Microsurgery Journal, the official global journal on microsurgery, and an active member of the Microsurgery Laboratory at Ioannina University.
With an excellent track record both in clinical and academic work, Dr. Lykissas acquired the status of Director of the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics and Spine at Metropolitan Hospital. In November 2013, he received an award for best scientific paper by the Spine Journal, a US journal with the largest readership worldwide, as well as an award from the North American Spine Society, the highest award for a spine surgery specialist.
During his clinical work, Dr. Lykissas never underestimated the importance of education and research in the fields of spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics and microsurgery. Currently, he teaches at the University of Ioannina, as a practitioner specializing in the fields of spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics and microsurgery. In addition, he is a member of several international scientific societies, including the Scoliosis Research Society, the North American Spine Society, the Pediatric Orthopedics Society of North America, the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery and AOSpine, playing a significant role in the development of research in the fields of spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics and microsurgery.
Dr. Lykissas is a member of a research team for the European program "MICRO: A cross-border microsurgery center of excellence for the promotion of research, training and education", a program aiming to develop a virtual reality simulator in the field of surgery.
Dr. Lykissa’s goal is to offer individualized treatments, apply rules and indications as dictated by study-based medical practice (Evidence Based Medicine), and minimize invasiveness and surgery costs. Actively involved in clinical practice and research, Dr. Lykissas aims to improve the quality of life of patients and eliminate pain.
