Dr. Panagiotis Lainas, MD, MSc, MSurg, PhD, is Associate Director of General Surgery at Metropolitan Hospital, offering specialized clinical and surgical services in the fields of gastrointestinal diseases (stomach, small and large intestine, rectum, anus, biliary tract, pancreas), surgical oncology, severe obesity and bariatric surgery, abdominal wall hernias and emergency surgery. Since September 2022, he is Head of the Department of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases at Healthspot Diagnostic Centers of the Hellenic Healthcare Group. In December 2023, he was appointed Head of the Department of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Metropolitan Hospital. Concurrently, he holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor of Bariatric Surgery at the European University of Cyprus.
Dr. Lainas completed his secondary education at the European School of Brussels I (Belgium) and graduated from the Medical School of the University of Crete (Greece). He then worked as a scientific associate at Paris-Saclay University (France), where he obtained a Master of Science (MSc) in Surgical Sciences (Master de Sciences Chirurgicales et Nouvelles Technologies Interventionnelles). He subsequently completed a PhD in Surgical Sciences in the field of genetically modified hepatocyte transplantation for the treatment of inherited metabolic disorders and was awarded his doctorate with distinction from Paris-Saclay University in October 2012.
He specialized in General Surgery in Paris (Antoine-Béclère, Cochin, and Institut Montsouris hospitals), receiving the Certification in General Surgery. He then served for eight years as a University General Surgeon at Antoine-Béclère Hospital (Paris-Saclay University), where he further specialized in minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, surgical oncology, bariatric and metabolic surgery, abdominal wall hernia repair and emergency surgery.
Dr. Lainas has authored 127 publications in peer-reviewed international journals, with 2792 citations and an H-index of 25. He is a regular reviewer for 27 international surgical journals and member of several international research groups and scientific societies. He serves on the Editorial Board of the journal Obesity Surgery and is also an Associate Editor for the journal Obesity Facts.
