MRI ENTEROGRAPHY

ON THE DAY OF YOUR MR ENTEROGRAPHY, DO NOT FORGET TO BRING WITH YOU

  • Any recent exam that is relevant to the reason your scan is performed
  • Previous scans of the same part of the body
  • Medical note from your physician, stating the reason for your scan
  • The exam requisition
  • A copy of the creatinine blood test result, if required and the test has been done at an outside facility
  • The contrast media your doctor has prescribed you
  • Any official document for identification purposes (i.e. passport, ID) and your SSN

HOW THE SCAN IS PERFORMED

When you arrive at the hospital, you'll be asked to fill in a questionnaire about your health and medical history. This helps us to ensure you can have the scan safely. As the MRI scanner produces strong magnetic fields, it's important to remove any metal objects from your body (i.e. jewellery, watch, dentures, hearing aids).

You will then lay on a mobile table which moves inside a ring-shaped device. Straps and pillows may be used to help you stay in position.  You will hear buzzing and whirring noises, when scanning starts. You will be able to communicate with the technologist via intercom. The technologist may ask you to hold your breath at certain points to avoid blurring the images.

The procedure can last from 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the size of the area being scanned and the number of images being taken.

HOW TO PREPARE

If your scan is going to be held with contrast medium administration, your creatinine blood test is required within 30 days prior to your examination day, in case you have any one of the following; you are over 65 years old, take medication for diabetes or high blood pressure or suffer from kidney disease. You may have the blood test on the day of your scan in our premises. Please allow 1 hour before your scan to get the result.

It is advised to wear clothes without metal zips, fasteners, buttons, underwire (bras), belts or buckles.

  • Women

MRI without contrast medium can be performed at any time during pregnancy, and is allowed with/ or without contrast medium during breast feeding.

  • Claustrophobia
If you are claustrophobic, please have your physician prescribe an anti-anxiety medication to take the day of the study. Please contact us at 210 4807082 if you need to get sedated during your scan.

  • Allergies

If you have a history of serious allergy on MRI contrast medium, please contact us at 2104807082, 08:00-16:00. Your ordering physician is responsible for prescribing the pre-medications for you. The following pre-medications are usually recommended:

    • 12 hours prior to your scan, 2 pills Medrol 16mg
    • 2 hours before your scan, 2 pills Medrol 16mg
    • 1 hour before your scan 1 pill Zirtek 5mg
  • Implantable Heart Devices

If you bear an implantable electronic heart device like pacemaker or defibrillators, you may still have an MRI, provided your device is MRI conditional. However, your device should be checked and adjusted before entering the magnetic field. Please call us at 2104809171, 08:00-16:00, on weekdays, to book your appointment.

  • Diet

    Two days before your scan:

  • refrain from fruits, vegetables, legumes, and dairy products.

The day before your scan:

  • after 15:00 am refrain from any solid food (you can have decaf coffee and any broth)
  • take 1 sachet of KLEAN-PREP or FORTRANS every 2 hours, starting at 15:00 (you will take 4 sachets in total). You will dilute each sachet in 1 to 1.5L water or clear liquid (juice without bits)
  • You may take your medications at their normal time with clear liquids only (water, apple juice).

WHEN YOU SHOULD COME

Please arrive 1.5 hour before your appointment to resume preparation and complete registration.

AFTER YOUR SCAN

After the exam you can return to your normal routine. You will likely be told to drink lots of fluids to help your kidneys remove the contrast material from your body.

Your implantable pacemaker or defibrillator should be reset; in case you bear such a device.

YOUR RESULTS

On the day of your exam, our staff will inform you when to expect your result. Your report will be sent to you via email, while your electronic images will also be available in My Ygeia App.
