FEMALE PELVIS / GYNECOLOGIC CANCER

The special MRI techniques play a significant role in detecting and assessing the extent of gynecologic cancer and a series of other female pelvic conditions. These techniques significantly increase diagnostic accuracy when identifying and characterizing a lesion, assisting gynecologists in performing targeted biopsy and selecting the most suitable treatment.

They also contribute in identifying the extent of the disease (staging) with great accuracy, before the patient undergoing surgery or radiotherapy. In patients with locally advanced disease who must undergo radical radiochemotherapy (external radiotherapy, brachytherapy and chemotherapy), this is the only imaging test that allows detailed evaluation of the response during and immediately after treatment. Upon conclusion of the treatment, it assists in early recurrence detection.

A multiparametric study is the combination of special MRI techniques.

Multiparametric MRI combines special techniques with high-resolution anatomical images, significantly increasing accuracy when detecting cancer.

At our Unit, Multiparametric MRI is performed using a state-of-the-art latest generation Siemens Skyra 3 Tesla scanner with a 60 channel dedicated abdomen coil.

ULTRA MODERN FEMALE PELVIC IMAGING

With multiple applications in female pelvic imaging (diagnosis, preoperative and radiotherapy planning, treatment result monitoring).
With a team of qualified radiologists and radiophysicists, who apply special protocols in tune with international standards, adjusted to the anatomical area and condition under investigation.
With diagnosis offered by doctors with long experience and specialization in MRI, who have received training in centers of excellence in the USA and are recognized in Greece.
The Unit works closely with the Metropolitan Hospital Radiation Oncology Center. We are the only Unit in Greece and one of the few in Europe to conduct external radiotherapy and brachytherapy under multiparametric MRI guidance.

MRI guidance assists in accurately identifying the extent of cancer during brachytherapy planning*, which helps in targeting the radiation to the areas that need to receive it.

WHEN IS A MULTIPARAMETRIC FEMALE PELVIC STUDY INDICATED?

In detecting and assessing a series of female pelvic conditions.
In performing local staging of cancer before treatment

It detects the extent of the disease with great accuracy. In the event of the cancer spreading to the parametrium or the neighboring organs, such as the urinary bladder or the rectum, it changes the treatment approach, by avoiding surgery and administering radical radiochemotherapy.

In planning the radiotherapy (external radiotherapy and brachytherapy)

MRI assists in identifying the extent of the cancer and accurately planning the areas to receive radiation. During radiotherapy and immediately after, it depicts the areas that have responded and is used as a prognostic indicator of the final treatment result.
